In defence of a notebook of random ideas and pictures
I believe that in order to tackle an idea completely, you must begin with smaller ideas and they will likely be disjointed and piecemeal. They will be chaotic and fleeting. There will be moments of distraction; a feeling like you should note or record something that, on first taste, does not seem immediately relevant to the picture you are working on. My hope is you will be encouraged to see that none of this process is in vain.
Over the last 2 years I have noted various ideas and incomplete notebooks. I have a tiny notebook of one page short-stories I swore I would actively contribute to. Kept it up for a time every few weeks, until I got more comfortable with other aspects of my life and no longer felt the need for that routine. That idea planted seeds invisible and unknowing. I started thinking of short stories that could be treated as fictional lore about my immediate surroundings. Here is what I mean: I live near a park, and my hope was to one day create a soundwalk which incorporated a geo-located narration that one could participate in as they moved. This narrative would not be reflective, but rather entertaining. It would tell the tale of a young boy who left his village to find a rare beast heart to heal a loved one. Beasts are fleeting and rare, but there was one known to live under a nearby walkway. It was rather silly, and fantastical. However it became a piece of a song that I eventually wrote about the valley as a whole. and a man's decision to stand right where he is and know what is around him; one of the foundations for Fossil Trails.
My point is: I could not have foreseen the future inspiration I drew from a tiny fantasy short story I at one point wanted to write and how it truly lend itself to a little diddy I became very fond of and is now a cornerstone for this album I am currently trying to piece together and eject from my mind.
I have used written poetry and imagery from things I've put into little notebooks as well; stuff I wrote on. a whim based on a feeling only.
Please let yourself journal or write when you feel so inclined. It could be about anything. You never know when you will be re-inspired to use it later. Do not get rid of it. Keep it in a specific book for a specific purpose. Our thoughts and visions are little tiny miracles capturing the human experience. It is our duty to record at least a few of them in our lifetimes for the future humans who take our place.
